Read the proof of Theorem 1.17 in Rudin. This is an important construction which shows that every real positive Borel function is the
pointwise limit of simple functions. Read also Theorem 1.27 (a simple consequence of the monotone convergence theorem), and Fatou's Lemma
(Theorem 1.28).
