I was a senior lecturer (associate professor) at
Department of Mathematical
Sciences at
Aalborg University.
My professional interests were/are: Mathematics generally,
theoretical statistics (also Bayesian) and statistical
consulting plus, to a certain extent, computer algebra og number
theory.
Moreover teaching in these areas.
My preferred statistics package has the short name of
R.
It is
free software
and has a high professional standard.
Many statisticians have developed packages for R.
If you complement with the package with dynamical graphics,
GGobi, which has an interface to
R, you have good help as a statistician.
Since 1987 I have written my documents with
LaTeX,
which is unequalled in rendering mathematical formulæ.
I rarely use office packages but kan anyhow recommend
LibreOffice.org.
If you want to put mathematical formulæ into the Web you can use
LaTeX2HTML,
which render them as graphical elements.
If the formulæ should be better integrated in the text, ideally
you should use
MathML,
which is a package to
XML
and its browser variant
XHTML.
Newer browsers in principle support MathML, but there are still
problems with making it work.
My preferred operating system is
Linux,
which I have used since 1998.
At that time a good deal of insight in hardware and operating mode
was required, but now it is quite easy.
You don't need to give up Windows because the two systems can
coexist on the same hard disk.
To boot (pun!) you can run Linux from a CDROM without installing it.
